I actually stopped enjoying the performing.
I’d read countless books on comedy writing and I couldn’t make them work.
Friends would say to me: “Hey, I like your stuff, you sound really well-rehearsed and scripted.” No matter what method I used, my comedy material sounded exactly like that… material. I sounded scripted because that’s what I was.
I kept reading that I had to write 50 jokes a day and throw out the rubbish ones and write new ones. After all, all the top gag writers have been doing this for years, right? But in all honesty, I was disgusted with the whole process.
I was constantly being told I was much funnier in real life and, without wanting to sound arrogant, I knew that. But with the approach I had been using I couldn’t capture my natural sense of humour.
But it was all about to change.
After stumbling across your website I debated over whether to purchase the materials as I already had countless books on writing and performing comedy. Being such “a student of comedy”, I’m a hard audience as I know and have tried the majority of approaches to writing out there. But sometimes you just have to move out your comfort zone and take the plunge.
I’m so glad I did.
I have learned more about the comedy writing and performing process in the last few weeks than I have ever learnt anywhere else. I have so many great tools in my comedy arsenal at last and not one of them involves me writing gags until my head hurts.
For my money the Stand-up Comedy Fast Start Guide and the Comedy Timing Secrets ebook are worth the cost alone. But with the information in the other guides, I now have a more rounded knowledge of stand-up.
I feel like I’m streets ahead.
The difference between the U.S. comedy scene and the one in the U.K. is not that great; after all the bottom line is to be as funny as hell. What you’ve created finally allows me to do that.
I wrote my first bit of stand-up about a day after I finished reading them and even though I’ve yet to use it in front of an audience I’m confident that I have the tools and methodology to hone it until it’s “killer” funny or, as some of us Brits say, it “storms”.
Not only that but I’m passionate about the whole process again. I actually look forward to writing and I’ve never done that.
I’m also receiving the Comedy Success Professional Newsletter emails and it’s revelatory. I’ve stopped worrying about comparing myself to other comics as I now have my own comedy goals to focus on.
Thanks once again!
Cheers,
Jason
